Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief

David Winston, RH(AHG), and Steven Maimes
See book keywords and concepts
Small amounts of this paste are taken daily to cure infertility and diseases of the female genitalia as well as to increase the quantity and quality of seminal fluid. The root infused in oil is used topically to treat skin diseases. The leaves can be infused in ghee and applied to boils and sores. Modern Uses In modern ayurvedic practice, shatavari still is used as a female reproductive tonic. Animal studies have confirmed that it enhances fertility and libido.
In men, it improves erectile dysfunction, and in women, it relieves amenorrhea and infertility caused by minor hormonal imbalances or stress. In both animal and human studies, rhodiola has shown substantial benefit for the heart. It was able to prevent stress-induced heart damage and arrhythmias and improve the strength of the heart muscle.
In one Chinese study, forty-two men with infertility (low sperm count and/or motility) were given xli ounce of lycium fruit per day. After two months of treatment, thirty-three patients had returned to normal levels of fertility and all of them were able to eventually father children. Dosage and Safety Tincture (1:4): 60-90 drops up to four times per day. Decoction: Add 2 tsp. dried fruit to 12 oz. water, decoct 15-20 minutes, steep 40-50 minutes. Take up to three cups per day. As a Food: Eat up to 1 oz. per day.
This herb is used to treat infertility in both men and women as well as impotence, frequent urination, night sweats, dizziness, ringing in the ears, and fatigue. It also is used to strengthen respiratory function in cases of dry lungs with a chronic cough. Furthermore, it has demonstrated benefits for treating hemoptysis (coughing blood) and tuberculosis. In 1993, two unranked Chinese athletes broke world records in swimming competitions and Chinese women runners won six of nine track meets at the world championships in Germany.
Lycium may benefit infertility (low sperm count and/or motility) in men. • In women, rhodiola, according to several preclinical investigations, may help restore loss of menstrual cycles (amenorrhea) and increase fertility resulting from minor hormonal imbalances or stress. In men, it may help improve erectile dysfunction. • Schisandra tones the sexual organs of both men and women. For men, it increases the production of sexual fluids, improves sexual stamina, and treats premature ejaculation and low sex drive.
Coauthor David Winston says that he wouldn't think of working in his clinical practice with patients who have autoimmune diseases, immune deficiency conditions (cancer, chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome, fibromyalgia), depression, anxiety, allergies, infertility, erectile dysfunction, type 2 diabetes, and a host of other health problems without using adaptogens.

Many scientists speculated that the infertility spike could be due, at least partly, to the abundance of chemicals to which the group is exposed: neither genetics nor lifestyle is enough on its own to explain the jump. The CDC itself had released findings in 2005 from a comprehensive survey of Americans dispersed across the population who were registering the presence of at least 148 chemicals in their blood,9 a similar chemical mix to that which had been found in the blood of Europeans.

More serious complications include inflammation of the testicles, which can create problems in the tubes through which sperm travels and also potentially lead to infertility. Chlamydia can also lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women if not treated. Younger people (under 25) who are sexually active with multiple partners seem to be most at risk.

Given these findings, it may well be that constant lack of sun exposure along with physical congestion, is the main cause of the increased infertility problems among the city populations in the world. If you want to improve your sex life or fertility rates, rather than using one of the currently available costly treatments and risking your health due to their serious side effects, I would recommend that you first try the sun. Women, of course, benefit from sunlight, too. Their levels of female hormones rise when they are exposed to particularly one specific portion of UV light, i.e.

By the time a woman is diagnosed with 'polycystic ovaries' or anovulatory (not ovulating) infertility, it's likely that the harmful consequences of Syndrome O have already seriously affected many organ systems in her body," observes Dr. Feinberg, author of Healing Syndrome O. Diabetes Drug May Boost Fertility The drug metformin (Glucophage), which is used to make the tissues of diabetics more insulin-sensitive, can help treat the type of infertility that is caused by a failure to ovulate. In some women who are not diabetic, excess insulin levels interfere with ovulation. For these women, metformin may restore normal ovulation. It is considered safe for use by women trying to get pregnant. See your doctor for more information.

This potent antioxidant may be of particular benefit in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that involves insulin resistance, elevated testosterone levels, and infertility. In one study, researchers asked twenty women with PCOS to take 600 mg of NAC three times daily for four weeks. By the end of the study, the women's insulin levels had decreased by one-third, and their testosterone levels dropped by more than half. NAC may have more general benefits in preventing insulin resistance, especially for people who eat a high-fructose diet. Take 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily.

Further research is necessary to establish definitive use for infertility. Sometimes, extra vaginal bleeding occurs with the use of these tablets, as does insomnia, and decreased blood sugar. Discontinue use if any of these occur. 763 DIAGNOSIS Our libido (sex drive) is the biological force connected with sexual arousal. It is associated with the hypothalamus part of the brain and is influenced by various hormones and chemicals. Loss of libido is a fairly common problem. It can occur in both men and women, but tends to affect women more.

Formerly recommended as a treatment for female infertility, impotence, and low libido in both men and women, it was also used to aid rejuvenation after a long illness. The herb became widely known in the West when medal-winning Bulgarian Olympic athletes claimed that use of Tribulus had contributed to their success. High-quality studies on its use and dose are still limited, but we recommend 300 milligrams daily, since side effects are few and far between.
That increase indicates that men are becoming much more aggressive about wanting to have low testosterone treated, because they fear or are experiencing effects such as thinning bones (osteoporosis), infertility, reduction in facial and body hair, or a decrease in mood, energy, and sexual function and desire. Luckily, we can suggest who might be a candidate for testosterone replacement. While the majority of erectile-dysfunction cases are caused by vascular issues, about 20 percent are associated with low testosterone levels.
Too little of these hormones can result in infertility or miscarriage. Too much—which often happens when women take fertility drugs—can have the opposite effect, leading to twins, triplets, quadruplets, and septuplets. Essentially, menopause signals the end of the hormonal symphony that produces ovulation: Your ovaries run out of viable eggs, interrupting your cycle of hormones and monthly periods.

For more than 125 years after Armand Trousseau first described it in 1865, hemochromatosis was thought to be extremely rare. Then, in 1996, the primary gene that causes the condition was isolated for the first time. Since then, we've discovered that the gene for hemochromatosis is the most common genetic variant in peopie of Western European descent.

And now that the data are emerging to show links between increases in infertility and the rise in ubiquitous chemicals, people are beginning to take note and doctors are now looking for clues in food, water, and the home. The very things that make up the fabric of our lives may be largely responsible for our progressively more defunct health and "fecundity," which is how scientists refer to the ability to procreate. Without a doubt, researchers will continue to explore the effects of pollution on pregnant mothers, fetuses, and adults in general.
